LAWLESS REFLECTIONS

August 26th - October 22nd, 2021 Los Angeles

Arushi Kapoor is pleased to present ‘LAWLESS REFLECTIONS’ an exhibition by contemporary artist Lindsay Dawn at ARUSHI in Los Angeles. Featuring a body of work that focuses on introspection, rumination, and the artist’s journey beginning in the subconscious as it translates to the physical realm.

Lindsay’s paintings have attributes that directly represent the complexity and beauty of the human experience and its candid relationship with the female form. Refusing to limit herself to a single style while staying true to her crux, we continually see Lindsay incorporate a variety of mediums on canvas and paper. Along with her interpretation of ones identity, when starting a new piece, she draws from emotional resonance in memories of conversations, music, and material objects.

‘LAWLESS REFLECTIONS’ is a journey through Lindsay’s process of deep self reflection from an unrestricted, egoless perspective. The intention behind this collection is for the viewer to emphasize the importance of observing the relationship between their innermost self and how deeply rooted aspects, and experiences, translate to the innumerable layers of ones personality.

The observer that lives inside of you, the one who finds inspiration in the minute details. When your mind is drawn those and somehow they become a part of your life or shine a light on aspects that have always existed but you are now conscious of them. The sound of the rain, a song, a conversation. Or maybe, the walkman the homeless man was listening to, that reminded you how much you loved a song in 1999.

The seemingly small aspects in life that become part of your identity.. what are they to you? The traits that stay vivid in the minds of those you love long after you have parted ways. When your time in their life has been fulfilled and you carry on to the next adventure. A song, your favorite drink, your addictions, something you always carry with you.. what are they to you?

Trauma often shows up in our everyday life if we choose not to work through it.. on a certain day during a month, or a page in a book that resonated with you, a scene of a movie.. it can make you feel like you’re trapped, translating to the conscious mind, we can feel like we’re trapped behind bars, or limiting ourselves to be who we really are, until you choose to dive deeper.

What makes you feel free? A question we don’t ask ourselves enough — this piece amplifies the feeling of freedom, letting go of the expectations we have for ourselves and finding the confidence to feel free. It challenges you to ask yourself the same — what makes you feel free?

This piece is a sort of introspection through my biggest inspirations — artists of many forms, I find influences from my studies and infatuation with people I can see myself in. These influences show up in my work and also my identity of self.

What does your inner child yearn for?

Maybe its the smell of the rain, or drawing a heart for the first time on a card you give to your mom, maybe its the taste of a pop tart or the feeling of painting for the first time.. ask your self what does your inner child need in order to stay alive?

This piece explores the energy of protection. Often we have a face that steps up in the state of survival to stand as a form of protection from people or experiences that exist to feed our souls, but we don’t allow in because of fear. Here I entertain the fear of vulnerability, the act of being guarded can sometimes leave a feeling of emptiness on the other side of reality.

Who are you when you’re alone? Whether you are alone in a room or surrounded by people. Amelia is a walk through the emotions of self reflection, although loneliness manages to find everyone at some point, does it help to identify the layers of yourself? If you can do that, then how can you feel alone?

Chaos —

I thought to myself

the leaf of your monstera

stuck in my head

like the haunting thought

of my mothers last breath

you fell asleep

curled into me

the sweet essence of lust

though I still feel your touch

keep the mask on my soul

far too removed

on this Monday with you.

‘Rosalie’ holds a direct idea of self reflection, here we are able to explore the process of the separation between what we perceive as reality and what our innate reality is — a process often beginning in the subconscious and eventually making itself visible in the physical. What can we learn from self reflection, and where do you draw the line of reality?

Dissociation — the disconnection from ones own self or a part of ones own self. The disconnect from the mind to the body, drifting, or like you’re floating around above your body. Without knowing in those moments that it’s not rare to live through those feelings for long periods of time. You ask yourself who am I? Where am I? Until you find the feeling of home.

The beauty and calm of life peaks when you silence the chatter of your own mind. Like the calmness you feel when you’re at the beach and can hear the waves crashing, for a moment everything stills. You’re there, with yourself, and the world makes sense in those moments.

This piece is an exploration of the identity most people experience, but few get to see beyond the surface. I often find this ‘social’ identity to be the farthest from my authentic self, but provides the easiest way to protect my energy. The blue represents the calming aspect I bring to those around me while being outlined in black this is a symbol of protection. I find myself feeling boxed in this reality I created, like a chameleon, I feel safe to blend in opposed to trying to stand out.
